ERR_PROTECTED ERROR: nsfsem2.c/ln In IBM Domino

1

My customer has been getting a series of errors at the Domino console, "ERR_PROTECTED". The Domino version is 8.5.3FP6 HF1020. The error is causing Domino to think that the database files are read-only. But looking at the windows file properties, we see that they are not, and neither are their parent directories.

There are approximately 1000 databases (all the same template) being used at any one time, and this is happening on three clustered servers. Because of this, the databases can't replicate, either manually or via the cluster. And it is not every replica that has the problem. Replica A on Server 1 may have a problem but will work fine on Server 2 and 3. Replica B on Server 1 and 2 might be fine, but not work on Server 3.

Because these customer databases are used the most, it seems like they are the only ones affected, but they are not. The commonly accessed databases are often marked as read-only. For example, the OpenLog database, a support ticket database, and even Names.nsf and DA.nsf can be affected

These are traditional web page being accessed. That is, there are no Xpages involved.

Rebooting the server takes care of the problem for the time being, and even for several hours. But as web traffic increases after noon-ish, they begin to occur again, until we need to reboot again.

Here are some sample lines from the domino console:
Almost every agent writes to OpenLog at some point...

[1940:000D-1B00] err_protected> ERR_PROTECTED ERROR: D:LotusDominodataOpenLogOpenlog1_5Apache.nsf [ntupdate.c/ln 2399]

Support Tickets get updated with new statuses, etc.

[1940:000D-1B00] err_protected> ERR_PROTECTED ERROR: D:LotusDominodatasupport.nsf [nsfsem3.c/ln 1238]

Or this one when a scheduled LS agent is run (it updates docs in a customer doc)

[1A28:0002-1A2C] Hardware/OS error (Access to data denied.) writing to database (D:LotusDominodatacustomer1customer1.nsf), Length=30 (PID=1A28/TID=2)

Whatever the problem is, it seems that it happens with any of the web facing servers.

Any clue as to why this might be happening is most welcome.

For reference, this blog link, Weird issue resulting in application getting corrupt from 2012 comes close to what I am seeing.
