Upgrade question

0

I have a Dell workstation with nvidia m2000 graphics card that was provide with dual boot options. Ubuntu 17 and windows 7. I am not familiar with ubuntu so I have bene working in windows. A few days ago I attempted to boot into ubuntu and it automatically started doing some sort of upgrade. I did not know what was happening so I left it alone. Something went wrong. Now when the PC boots in Linux, it gets locked into the same screen with messages.
Can I install ubuntu 18 from a USB drive into the same partition? Will it repair the old OS and migrate the installed software without any losses?
This is important for me as the PC will control a piece of hardware (a specialized microscope).

What do you mean by "it gets locked into the same screen with messages?" And exactly what messages? Those details may be very important. Installing Ubuntu 18 is likely to overwrite the older system - you might consider that a 'repair', I suppose. Overwriting means you may lose all data, of course.
