Can't alter permissions for samba share.

I'm running 18.04 LTS server. I've got a samba share mounted locally. I can't seem to change the permission for its sub folders. It's at /mnt/samba/Plex and i can read/write there fine, as can windows computers. But the sub folders from there on down (/mnt/samba/Plex/Movies etc.) are all read only. in the smb.conf file everything is set to 0777, but that hasn't helped. I've also tried chmod -R 777, and that hasn't helped either. I'm a bit of a noob at Linux and it's making me tear my hair out.

Where are the original folders located? What about write permission in the original sub-folders it its local computer?

  • Did you use sudo in the change file command?

  • Thanks for the pointers. Yes i'd been doing this all as root, so should've had power to do it. It's fixed now, hurrah! I went to the where the original folder is located and changed the permissions there using chmod -R 777. I can read/write locally at /mnt/samba/Plex, and i can read/write over the network with Windows.
