Chromium lost bookmarks and history after an automatic update

0

I am using Ubuntu 16.04. Yesterday Chromium automatically updated and immediately crashed. After I restarted it, the bookmarks and history for the last three months were gone. It may be that I had inadvertently been signed into a Chromium account throughout those last 3 months, because I vaguely remember seeing a green dot instead of the currently grey-and-white "Current user" icon. However, if that happened it happened accidentally, because I do not use any google or Chromium accounts and so can not log into them.

How can I recover the lost bookmarks?

Is it safe to try to recover the bookmarks by clicking "Turn on sync..." or will it result in purging my bookmarks from the server as well?

If you don't have an account, then you have nothing to sync to, turning on synchornize won't achieve anything.

  • I vaguely remember that there was a green dot in place of the "Current user" sign. This suggests that I could inadvertently log into some account and I suspect that since then all my browsing history and bookmarks are store there. Could it be the case? The problem is that if I created and used that account, it was inadvertently and I do not have access to it anymore, nor do I even know its email. How can I recover my bookmarks or at least browsing history in this situation?

  • If my bookmarks and history are indeed stored online, will they be deleted from Chromium servers if I do "Turn on sync..."?

  • If your current profile is not configured to logged you into an account, then I will repeat the phrase, you have no account synchronize data with. However, you can easily backup your current profile, and turn it on without any risk to your data.

  • OK Thank you! This makes sense. However, where are my bookmarks then? Just 2 days before the crash I made another bookmark. I had been also using Chromium quite intensively for the last 3 months. But now I do not see any trace of this. How could this happen?
