How to change DNS server in Ubuntu 16.04 server? (designated method does not work)

0

I need to change the DNS settings in an Ubuntu 16.04 LTS server.

I edited the /etc/network/interfaces file (as per this answer) and changed the dns-nameservers to the correct DNS server addresses.

Then I ran sudo ifdown eth0 && sudo ifup eth0 (the network interface in my config is also called eth0) and even rebooted the entire machine.

However domains are still being resolved through the old DNS server. If I run nslookup and enter server in there, it still shows the old DNS servers as default. Not the ones I configured before the reboot.

How do I permanently change my server's DNS settings?
