VLC Freezing DVD Playback

0

I am getting intermittent freezing when I play a dvd with VLC. It most often seems to happen if I adjust the volume within VLC or exit fullscreen and adjust the volume in Ubuntu. The video freezes, but the audio keeps playing. It happens at different times in the video. If it's in fullscreen, I have to use the workspace switcher to get access to the desktop. Then I right click on the VLC icon in the dock and click "quit". The VLC icon still shows in the upper right corner of the desktop. I then have to right click the icon, click "show VLC" then use xkill to get rid of it.

I am using VLC 3.0.6 and ubuntu 18.04

Can someone help?
