ubuntu 16.04 lightdm: stuck at login loop, but startx works

0

After an accident shutdown, ubuntu stuck at login loop, I can login cli with same user and password by crtl+alt+f1. After several hours struggling, I solved the problem and just want to share it because most posts didn't include my situation.

I tried several solutions including:

  1. reset permission and remove .Xauthority,

  2. reinstall ubuntu-desktop

  3. reconfigure lightdm

  4. reinstall nvidia driver

  5. check xorg log

but none of them works, after I dig into log files, I found this message in syslog:
(lightdm:3411): CRITICAL **: session_get_login1_session_id: assertion 'session != NULL' failed
and another error in auth.log:
lightdm: PAM unable to dlopen(pam_kwallet.so): /lib/security/pam_kwallet.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

so I finally figure out that the issue is because of pam-kwallet package broken, and the solution at this link:
cannot login into locked Ubuntu 14.04 session Unity

$ sudo apt-cache search kwallet |grep pam
libpam-kwallet4 - KWallet (KDE 4) integration with PAM
libpam-kwallet5 - KWallet (Kf5) integration with PAM
$ sudo apt-get install libpam-kwallet4 libpam-kwallet5
$ sudo service lightdm restart

Hope it will be helpful.
