FFMPEG issue — "[NULL @ 0x7fa48980e200] Unable to find a suitable output format — converting .m4a to .mp3

I am trying to convert a folder full of music to .mp3 -- see code:
#! /bin/bash
for i in *.m4a ; do
/users/.../itunesmedia/music/ffmpeg -i "$i"
-acodec libmp3lame $(basename “${i%.m4a}”).mp3 sleep 60
done
sudo chmod +x dothis.sh
It says it's an invalid argument.
ffmpeg mp3

“${i%.m4a}”--> I believe these should be regular double quotes.
