Ubuntu 18.10 won't boot with Nvidia driver (works only with open source driver)

0

I've tried the 390 (which is recommended), 340 and 410.

Software & Updates dialog

and both lead to the same result:
enter image description here (sorry for blurry photo)

Ubuntu does not boot with those Nvidia Drivers.

I managed to get rid of the driver through the root shell and that wasn't that hard, but I still cannot install the Nvidia Driver.

Which version of the driver should I try?

My specs:

  • CPU AMD Phenom II x4 955

  • GPU GeForce GTX 650
    8 gig of RAM

  • Ubuntu 18.10 64-bit.

And btw can I just download it as I do on Windows? There is "downloadable" stuff on the official website, but they are .rub and do not do anything after long loading.

  • Do you have secure boot enabled? If so, disable it, or have a look at this Q&A
