Doing independent contracting during vacation time

I've had my first full-time job for almost 3 months when I got an opportunity to teach a 2-week course for another company on a technology that my current company is about to start using next year. It seemed like a win-win-win situation:




  • I'd get to earn extra money during my vacation.

  • I'd get the opportunity to improve my skills at my full-time job.

  • The company I'm doing the contract for has somebody to train their employees.


I decided to take the contract and subsequently informed my manager that I'm going to take 2 weeks off as vacation time, revealing what I'm about to do - by contract, I'm obliged to reveal to my company if I have engagements with other companies. He seemed a bit concerned:



He was ok with me doing this but noted that this was an "exception" and that "vacation is given to rest, no for doing extra work" and raised some concerns regarding burnout. All this seemed a bit strange to me since there was an apparent benefit for my company If I carried out this 2-week course during my vacation.



The course was a success and the company I did it for asked me to carry out more sessions in a few months. I plan to take the rest of my vacation for that, but I'm not sure If I want to share this with my manager. I suppose he may figure it out If I go away for two weeks again, but I also don't think I'm obliged to tell anybody what I'm doing during my vacation.



Should I inform my manager that I'm going to use up my vacation to work for another company (on a contractual basis) or should I just keep it silent? By the way, there's no risk that I'll join the company I'm doing the course for. I'm quite satisfied with my current job.
