Outlook 2016 crashes on start while trying to access StaticCache.dat - how do I fix?
Outlook 2016 has started crashing on startup while trying to access a file called StaticCache.dat
. I am assuming it is a corrupt cache file.
Outlook will run in safe more, but eventually crashes while doing various operations like accessing an email. So it is unusable. I tried repairing the Office365 installation using the repair tool, but this had no effect. I also tried clearing out old files using the built-in Windows tool and CCleaner.
Here is what is says in the event log when I start Outlook:

User Action
1. Open the file again. This situation might be a temporary problem that corrects itself when the program runs again.
2. If the file still cannot be accessed and

- It is on a removable disk, for example, a floppy disk or CD-ROM, verify that the disk is fully inserted into the computer.
3. Check and repair the file system by running CHKDSK. To run CHKDSK, click Start, click Run, type CMD, and then click OK. At the command prompt, type CHKDSK /F, and then press ENTER.
4. If the problem persists, restore the file from a backup copy.
5. Determine whether other files on the same disk can be opened. If not, the disk might be damaged. If it is a hard disk, contact your administrator or computer hardware vendor for further assistance.

How can I view this file in Explorer and remove it?

Thanks to this answer, I found that I could view the files in the fonts folder using UNC convention:
\computer-namec$WindowsFonts
I could then see the hidden StaticCache.dat
file. When trying to rename or delete it, Windows reported that the file was in use. To get around this I used LockHunter to unlock-and-rename the file. This fixed the problem and Outlook started without problem.
