Is it possible to replace conhost.exe with a later version (or ConPty) meant for W10?
I have a bunch of machines running on W8.1, which is obviously getting dated, but for various reasons I cannot update these machines for some time, but I would like to take advantage of the new Console Pseudo Terminal
(ConPty) with 24-bit color and many other graphical capabilities, now available on the Windows-10.
From MSDN blog site:
conhost.exe
- is the user-mode Windows Console UX & command-line plumbing
condrv.sys
- is a Windows kernel driver providing communication
infrastructure between conhost and one or more Command-Line
shells/tools/apps
Question:
Can I take a Windows-10 conhost.exe
(or ConPty.exe
) and put it on a Win 8.1 system?

Well, just try it and see.

If that's what I wanted to do and risk crashing the machine, I wouldn't have bothered asking here. Not very scientific, nor helpful comment.

Only someone who tried it can answer your question, and you can always rename the exe before copying it to the same folder.

Yeah, I guess this require a proper VM test, but was hoping to find someone who already know what is going on and what other dependencies are required to make it work. I know people have replaced cmd with success, but this is really a quite fundamental (and new) piece that relies on many other DLL,s etc. I'm pretty sure that if the binary crashes right-way, for any reason, then the machine will not even boot up.

Don't think so. If it can't work it will probably not even start.
