mysql remote clients hang, local connections ok

0

I have a working LAMP stack with MariaDB. Up to a couple days ago I could connect to mysql remotely to do development and troubleshooting. Now the server hangs on connection or soon thereafter. Very occasionally I can connect but the queries are sloooooow.

Localhost connections work fine and are always fast, which is fortunate as otherwise the server would be down.

Causes I've ruled out:

  • SQL not listening on port. It's set to 0.0.0.0:*. Telnet hangs instead of failing. (If it's working you get some handshaking text.)

  • DNS issue. skip_name_resolve is already set.

  • Locking issue. There are no open locks.

  • Busy server. The server is idle most of the time.

  • Misconfigured authentication. Confirmed that the GRANT is for 'user'@'%'.

  • Transient issue. I restarted mysql and networking.

Using wireshark I narrowed this down to the server not responding to client requests. Usually it doesn't respond at all, but sometimes it'll authenticate and then after that it either hangs for good or takes many seconds to respond.

Any help with how to troubleshoot mysql server would be appreciated.
