What happens if you say you're doing Adventurer League, but end up playing a completely home rule thing?

I've been going to this gaming center to play Adventurer League, but the DM is instead playing a World of Warcraft adventure that has nothing to do with AL itself proper, including variant rules like a mana system.

They are using actual D&D Adventurer's League branding including logos in the pamphlet and the publicity. The DM claims it's official, and when I tried to tell them it wasn't they insisted it was since “he bought the world of warcraft D&D book”.

So what can a player do? Can I call/write to the AL organizer and tell them that this event isn't really AL-official? Do I just stop going and look elsewhere? Do I ring up the D&D brass and tell them to slap the wrist of the DM in question?

You mention this is a World of Warcraft adventure thing, are they actually playing D&D or another system? Are they actually advertising as D&D 5e Adventurer's League using the D&D 5e AL branding? There can after all be other unrelated adventurers leagues, and it is not like WotC enjoys exclusive use of those words (nor would we want them to start thinking they should).

  • They are playing using 5e variant rules for world of Warcraft; that is using the 'mana system', but they are using the AL branding for it.

Are they using the entire branding such as logos, or did they simply name it "Adventure's League"? And is the DM actually claiming it's official adventurer's league content or could this just be a misunderstanding because the DM doesn't know what the AL actually is? Those are pretty important things to know to answer this question.

Do I just stop going and look elsewhere?

Assuming that you want to play official AL games, then you should definitely do this. The shop you are visiting doesn't supply what you want so you have to go elsewhere if you want to play AL.

Can I call/write to the AL organizer and tell them that this event isn't really AL-official?

I had a look through the AL website, including the FAQ and couldn't see any recommendations on how to handle this.

It sounds like they have wasted your time, and taking some steps that might save other people the same bother could be worthwhile.

Getting in touch with AL (e.g. through Twitter) could be a low effort approach to try to improve things, OTOH, it could also hurt the store so you should consider the effects there as well as on players.
