play video in minimal ubuntu
I am trying to play video using mplayer/vlc in minimal ubuntu. At start up i login into tty1, i installed xorg and executed startx command from tty1 which takes me to tty7 terminal automatically. In tty7 when i try to open video using mplayer i get black screen, same with vlc.
I installed mesa-vdpau-drivers but it did not help.
what are the minimum requirements(drivers/libraries) i must fulfil so that video can be displayed in minimal ubuntu. I am using x86 dual core cpu and nvidia GEForce 9 series graphics card.
what i am trying to achieve is to create kiosk like minimal linux installation which is able to play video, and i want video player to be the only application running.
Thank You.

By the time you've loaded X, mplayer and mesa-vdpau, there's effectively nothing to be saved by shooting for "minimal". I'd suggest linuxfromscratch.org as a much smoother path than trying to rip apart Ubuntu.

You could mod Minimal Ubuntu to play video, but at that point there's nothing "Minimal" about it and you can just go and install the regular Ubuntu or something more lean, like Xubuntu.
Go install Ubuntu, and if that is unfeasible (bad hardware), invest in better hardware. You can get a small Raspberry Pi for 45 bucks.
sorry i forgot to mention that i am using x86 dual core cpu. about video playing capabilities - i was able to play video following same steps in vmware minimal ubuntu installation but not on physical machine.

is there any reason that normal ubuntu is unfeasible to you?

there is no reason that normal ubuntu is infeasible as far as hardware is concerned, but i just want to keep things(minimum) that are necessary to play video and not full fledged OS.
