I have tried to change the amount of RAM allocated to a Windows 10 VM - host is Linux - but this doesn't appear to be reflected in the virtual machine.

Your virtual machine is running a 32-bit version of Windows and has a 4 GB memory limit.

You will need to create a new virtual machine and install a 64-bit operating system in order to allocate 6 GB to the virtual machine. This requires hardware that supports hardware virtualization.

Contrary to the accepted answer, our questioner simply needs to click over to the "Processor" tab in the machine "System" settings and select the box to enable "PAE/NX Support".

Note that if you do this on a VM with Linux installed on it, you may need to specify to install or boot a PAE enabled kernel. Check your distributions package manager and repositories. With Windows it should Just Work.

At that point, the 32bit OS can see a total of more than 4gb RAM. Any single process though will be limited to the 4gb amount of RAM it can have allocated to it though.

            • In the author's screenshot, the author was attempting to allocate 6 GB to the virtual machine, but Windows only detected 3.50 GB. Based on the fact Windows, already detects 3.50 GB of memory, would seem to indicate the PAE/NX extended feature is already enabled.

            • In fact, the author's screenshot specifically indicates that PAE/NX is already enabled. So my answer is actually correct, a 64-bit operating system must be used in order to set the virtual machine's base memory to 6 GB.
