Firefox, Opera unable to play DRM protected content on amazon prime but Google Chrome does it with no issues

1

I am running Ubuntu 18.04 x86_64 and as the title mentions, I find it very hard to get these browsers to play content from streaming sites like Amazon PrimeVideo. I understand that something called a Widevine decryption module is required and my Firefox install shows it listed in available plugins, however playback fails. For Opera I am unable to obtain the said module. Googling the issue convinced me that this is an old and widely known issue but I want to understand why is that the case? Most solutions were to simply use Chrome for video streaming which I find to be a waste of hard-drive space.

Can someone elaborate on what this module does and why does Firefox/Opera not play well with it but Google Chrome seems to have no problems?
