ASUS DSL-N16 router spontaneously resets to factory settings

I have an ASUS DSL-N16 router given by my ISP. I changed the default login, used it, and turned it off. On turning it on the next day, it had reset to the factory default username and password.

So I changed the default login again, stopped turning it on and off, and after a few days it had again reset to the factory default.

This problem is especially concerning given drive-by pharming attacks against routers with default settings.

How to change the username permanently on this specific router?
