Proper way to clone an Ubuntu Server 18.04 virtual machine?

I have a production Ubuntu Server 18.04 running Tomcat in a virtual environment. I'd like to clone it to create a test server with the same configuration.
I realize that it's best to install from scratch, but I am wondering if there's any half-decent way to just clone it? This would be much faster than a fresh install and would ensure that the configuration of the test server matches the production server exactly, except for specific things I would change.
The process of cloning a Windows server is well documented - i.e. sysprep. Is there a similar tool or process for doing things like
- Resetting DHCP client ID
- Changing hostname
- Resetting whatever unique ID's are generated for the "cloudy" features shipping in 18.04?
The correct answer might be that we can't reliably clone 18.04, which would be a shame.
