So yesterday I was using my normal PC (running 18.04), I had some Wine problems related to Python3 so I was reinstalling (sudo apt purge python3 then sudo apt install python 3) then Firefox got deleted, reinstalled it, went away to eat and couldn't log back in. When I restarted the PC it booted to a terminal so I wanted to start the GUI but when I do startx but it loads, gives black screen and just gets back to the terminal without an error. I tried reinstalling some things but I can't connect to my internet (WiFi and ethernet) and at this point I gave up and just used my laptop with the idea to fix it tomorrow (so now). But when I went to check on my server (18.04) today it had exactly the same problem, can't start the GUI and can't connect to the internet. Does anybody know what causes this, especially since it's on 2 PC's now?

could be related to kernel update, can you choose older kernel in GRUB and try?

I have tried the other kernel version and I still don't get GUI or internet. It does give me an error when I try startx:- xinit: server error xauth timeout in locking authority file /home/USER/.XauthorityAnd my drives aren't full
