Google Cloud SDK causing numerous problems, how to fully/properly uninstall?
I'm using Ubuntu 18.10 on my HP Pavilion 15-AU003TX laptop. Few months ago, I had installed (not using apt) Google Cloud SDK for some reason which I dont remember, and I didn't end up using it pretty well. But since then, bootup time has significantly increased but not until now I realized that it was this redundant/unused gcloud SDK installation that was causing it. Here's how I found out:
The first clue: often while booting, I see this message for a few seconds:
A start job is running for Google Compute Engine Instance Setup.
Following the instructions mentioned in this answer, around 10 mins after boot, systemd tells me that bootup isn't finished yet.
$ sudo systemd-analyze plot
Bootup is not yet finished
(org.freedesktop.systemd1.Manager.FinishTimestampMonotonic=0).
Please try again later.
Hint: Use 'systemctl list-jobs' to see active jobs
Then when I ran
systemctl list-jobs
:
$ systemctl list-jobs
JOB UNIT TYPE STATE
123 google-startup-scripts.service start waiting
152 google-accounts-daemon.service start waiting
112 google-clock-skew-daemon.service start waiting
144 google-ip-forwarding-daemon.service start waiting
1 graphical.target start waiting
172 google-shutdown-scripts.service start waiting
91 google-instance-setup.service start running
2 multi-user.target start waiting
143 google-network-setup.service start waiting
183 ureadahead-stop.timer start waiting
168 systemd-update-utmp-runlevel.service start waiting
11 jobs listed.
This tells me that its indeed the Google Cloud SDK scripts that are causing the delay in bootup & shutdown, and sometimes random freezes & lags too. There's an article here about uninstalling it, but that wont do anything as simply deleting the installation directory without removing its system-wide influence (init services, bash scripts etc) will only worsen problems. So, how can I entirely wipe out this nuisance out of my system and make things normal again ? Thanks in advance.
