Lenovo L430 Ubuntu 16.04 and 18.04 performance issues

I wanted to switch from Windows to Linux (Ubuntu 16.04 LTS or Ubuntu 18.04 LTS). The installation was without any issues but I had very severe performance issues. I was using Firefox (YouTube with 3 running videos) and IntelliJ Idea at the same time and CPU1-CPU4 were all at 100% at the same time my notebook heated up quite a lot. I first tried this with Ubuntu 18.04 and then switched to Ubuntu 16.04 and both had these problems. My Lenovo L430 is more than 5 years old and has 16 GB Ram.

After this very disappointing performance issues of Ubuntu, I switched back to Windows 10 which does only have 10% CPU usage under the same conditions and does not heat up that much.

I must admit that I am quite disappointed by Linux/Ubuntu for having such fundamental issues with hardware which is quite old. But I think that I will still give it a try in a few months maybe this issue is solved by then. I am just interested if someone had the same issues and how he could resolve them.

I would hazard a guess that your graphics card is not being utilized, and that all of the graphics rendering is being done in software

According to cnet - you have an intel HD 4000 graphics, and this should work OK. Try what I suggest here to check for using the graphics card.
