Ubuntu not detecting exterternal microphones or headset

I am having issues with the sound in Gnome it only detects the input as builtin mic but the mic doesn't work. It also doesn't detect my headset when I plug it in unless its a usb plugin nothing from the aux connector. How can I fix this? I am on an Asus laptop about two years old.
