How to search for a string and add value to adjacent cell

-1

I'm trying to create a document for work that lets you search for a name in a list and add value to an adjacent cell. A1 will contain a person's name, while in B2, each person will have a number of points earned.

A B
Alex 1
Bob 1
John 1

For example, I want to type the name Bob in a search bar and simply just add 1 to the cell next to his name. So afterwards Bob would have a total of 2. Only 1 will be added each time the name is entered.

I've poked around online to try and find a formula but haven't had much luck.

First, this is very bad data architecture, since you don't have an audit trail why Bob all of a sudden has 4 or 10 as a value. You can't tell if someone entered Bob by mistake and it should have been Tom instead. It would be better to save the value that were entered into the "search bar" into a data entry table, so you can see when the value was generated. Then use a formula that sums up the data entry table values for each name. Second, such a scenario can only be achieved with code. If you post the VBA you have so far, we can help. But we won't write your code for you.
