How do I politely tell a coworker what he's saying is inappropriate?

I work with a guy who cannot keep his thoughts to himself.

We had a prospective employee come in the other day and he stopped her in the hallway for 15 minutes talking about how much money he has, and after she left he said "she was cute, I hope she comes here".

The other day he loudly asked if any of us sitting near him think another employee is gay.

This morning he asked me, "Do you mind if I say something racist?"

If this wasn't at work, I'd tell him "shut the f*** up" but I need to keep it workplace-appropriate. I just ignore him and put in headphones while he's talking to me, but that doesn't make him stop.

What can I say to get him to stop talking?

  • My answer to "Do you mind if I say something racist?" would be a simple, flat, matter-of-fact "Yes".
