Unreliable taskbar and lock screen on Ubuntu 18.10

I have been using Ubuntu 18.10 alongside Windows on my laptop. I upgraded to Ubuntu 18.10 fine, but randomly, at times, the "taskbar" decides to die on me and does not show any new apps that are open.
At the same time, if I lock Ubuntu, the top bar goes into locked mode, but the screen does not go to the lock screen.
