What version of ubuntu should I install on a computer running windows vista 32 bit. I want to be able to install it alongside windows.

    Just because you have a 32bit version of windows on it, does NOT mean you are running a i686/32bit computer. You can download a release of Ubuntu & try it. Which desktop best suits you is dictated by tastes, the amount of memory you have, cpu you have and what you want to do with your machine. x86_64 bit machines were the norm before windows Vista came out
