Shall syslog be used with udp, tcp, or tcp over TLS?

Of course, it depends the usage:




  • UDP port 514 has been used by sysadmins for years to monitor IT mostly for performance, usage, maintenance. Loosing some logs was not important to get the whole picture

  • With security coming, loosing some logs becomes a problem, so TCP port 601 is needed to make it reliable

  • With advanced attacks, one want to ensure logs are not tempared, servers are authentified, and logs remain not readable by attakers. So we need TCP port 6514 with TLS


Is it the whole of it, what do I miss ?
