Logging into Putty
I'm trying to access a secure shell (SSH) on a Linux host at GoDaddy.com. I've installed Putty as recommended. I enter the hostname and port=22. Then I get a window and I'm asked for login. I enter that and then am asked for password. When I hit return after entering password the window disappears. It's like I exited.
Please note that I'm new to this type of stuff. Please give as much info as you can for clarity.

You may not have a valid shell on the remote machine. If your user/pass was bad, it would report that. Instead the remote is accepting it, and then exiting your session. So a "no login" shell is in use...

Note you ate not logging in to putty - you are trying to use putty to do an SSH login - you should change your title to reflect this.

In PuTTY select Close window at exit > Never - This way you will see any message the server has sent you before disconnecting you.
