LightDM background blocking desktop

I am having an issue when logging in to Xubuntu 18.04. Everything boots fine, but when I actually log in, the background from LightDM stays on the screen and there is nothing else, no panels, right-clicking does not even bring up a menu.

I know that everything is there because I can use my keyboard shortcuts to open a terminal, and though it still doesn't show, the cursor changes to an I-beam where the terminal opens. I can get everything back to 'normal' by hitting Ctrl+Alt+F1 and then Ctrl+Alt+F7, even the windows I opened with the shortcuts are all there.

This happens every time I log in, even if I only logged out. I'm still learning to use Linux and I'm not really sure where to look. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

  • I tried installing another desktop environment to see if it would happen to that one too, but now both are working fine... not sure what happened. Also not sure how to close this question...
