virtualbox not recognizing flash drive on ubuntu 16.04 host

I know that this question has been asked before and I have read and followed the responses that I have found.
[How to set up USB for Virtualbox?
Yes, I am using the latest version of virtualbox and have loaded the extension package. I have added my user ID to the virtualbox group.
I even set up the USB driver in the settings of the VM. So far, nothing has worked.
Who has suggestions?
